Brands

I think that to be able to fully decide on which brand to choose for this unit, it is important for me to research briefly each of the brand's concepts. I think that by doing this, the decision will be made easier for me. I am looking to be able to do a mixture of really creative looks as well as some more simplistic beauty shots.

Illamasqua -

"With British creativity at our roots and self expression in our hearts, our mission is to inspire you to take pride in everything you are and all that you aspire to become". - Illamasqua

Illamasqua is a British makeup brand, which launched in November 2008. Their name even suggests what the brand is all about, using a mashup of  the words 'Illusion' and 'Masquerade' to come up with the final name. Julian Kynaston founded the brand, and since then has joined forces with Joseph Corre, the son of Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren. The brand focuses on theatrical, adventurous and bold makeup looks.

I really enjoy the adventurous looks that Illamasqua create for their campaigns, as well as their products and packaging. I have used their products in my kit, as well as my own personal makeup. I think that if I were to choose Illamasqua for this unit, it would allow me to be creative, but also create beautiful makeup looks. Illamasqua's theme revolves around illusion and masking, so I think that this would allow me to challenge myself as well as the designs.

Bobbi Brown -

"The secret to beauty is simple; be who you are". - Bobbi Brown

Launched in 1991 by Bobbi Brown herself, this brand is all about the natural makeup look. Annoyed with the makeup styles that constantly featured during the eighties, she set herself a mission, to create wearable lip colours that were naturally gorgeous. This took off, and the company was acquired by Estee Lauder companies. Still to this day, Bobbi Brown is a leading makeup brand, that focuses on natural beauty.

I have bought 6 shades of the Bobbi Brown Pro Longwear Foundation for my kit, as I think that the work that Bobbi puts into her foundations to make them seem part of the skin and so natural is exceptional. If I were to use Bobbi Brown as my chosen brand for this unit, I think that it would have to be very much based on the skin, and creating flawless but natural looks. I am unsure of how I would be able to explore this brand in the creative/arty way that I would ultimately like to.

Yves Saint Laurent -

"The most beautiful cosmetic you can have is passion". - Yves Saint Laurent.

Yves Saint Laurent was founded in 1961 by himself and his partner, Pierre Berge. The cosmetic line was released later on after the success of the clothing designs, in 1978. The brand focuses on luxury, glamour and all things beautiful. This comes across in not only the product itself, but also the intricate packaging designs.

In a similar way to Bobbi Brown, I feel that this brand is not for me. I think that if I were to use this brand for this unit, I would be unsure of how far I could explore colour and textures in my work. I adore this brand for their makeup, but I feel I would not be able to create beauty makeup looks that were as exciting as other brands.

Laura Mercier -

"I've always been interested in making women look as beautiful as possible while making them look like themselves". - Laura Mercier

Laura Mercier is a brand created by makeup artist, Laura Mercier. She is known for her passion of creating a flawless base for her makeup looks, and the ability to accentuate one's natural beauty. Laura Mercier has worked in the field, and began the brand by creating colours that she would use on her clients all year round, rather than seasonal. Her brand was released in 1996, and is now found in many highstreet stores.

I think that Laura Mercier is an interesting brand, as it focuses wholly on the flawless base. If I were to use this brand in this unit, I would look at exploring different skin tones, textures and ages of skin to work on,which would be a little more different to your typical beauty shoots. I admire how Mercier has focused on skin tones, but ages and textures I think would help to promote their products even further.

Dior -

"Happiness is the secret to all beauty. There is no beauty without happiness". - Christian Dior.

Dior is a French Fashion House created by Christian Dior, in 1946. The cosmetics and perfume lines were released in 1947, and have been used behind the scenes in Dior's catwalks. Dior surrounds itself with the titles of haute couture and luxury, and the makeup follows this lead.

Dior contains a lot of colour, particularly pinks/red tones. I think that it would be exciting to create looks using this palette, exploring boldness, textures and skin tones. However, I don't think that this brand would push me to the best of my ability. I think that I need to choose a brand where I can create beauty but also more creative looks, so that I challenge myself.

 Revlon -

"Inspiring Love around the world" - Revlon.

Revlon is a highsteet brand of makeup, founded in 1932 by Charles Revson and Charles Lachman. Their first product was a revolutionary nail enamel, which helped spur on the popularity of this brand that we see today. Revlon is an affordable brand that focuses on new, exciting, bold nail and lip colours, as well as their 'ColourStay' technology, leaving their products transfer-resistant. They produce a whole line of cosmetics, from hair colourants to foundations.

I think that it would be interesting to create shoots for this brand, in particular because myself and my mother use this brand frequently in our own makeup. I think that it would be exciting to see how we could use their products to create individual, original looks, as their products are so bold and colourful.

Ellis Faas -

"Makeup lives. It's alive. It moves and has energy" - Ellis Faas

Ellis Faas is a dutch makeup artist, whose makeup brand was created in 2007. She always had a passion for fashion, and when her time as a photographer came to an end, she began experimenting with makeup. She worked for multiple brands including L'Oreal, but always wanted to create her own brand. The brand released the 'Human Colours' set, which only uses colours on the spectrum of the human body's, so that they compliment every skin tone. The beauty in this brand is that they not only produce vivid colours and crazy looks, they produce products for everyday makeup looks.

Ellis Faas is a new makeup brand to me, but I have instantly gravitated towards her looks. She creates beautiful but misshapen looks, which to me is fascinating. She purposely pushes the boundaries as to what is classed as beautiful and what is classed as messy. I think that the colours she uses are eye-catching, and I think that this brand would be a really intriguing brand to look at for this unit, as I can create a range of looks.

Chanel -

"Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself" - Chanel

Chanel is a worldwide fashion brand, focusing on timeless chic. The brand was founded by Coco Chanel in 1910 with her own boutique, and by 1920, she had followed the success of Chanel No.5 with her own beauty line. Her main focus of this line was to continue her belief in practical luxury and superior quality.

I think that using Chanel as my chosen brand would not suit my style of work as much as other brands. I truly love the brand, but I think that I need to challenge myself and create a range of looks, and I do not think that I would be able to do this with Chanel.

Tom Ford -

"Dressing well is a form of good manners" - Tom Ford.

Tom Ford is a men and womenswear, eyewear and beauty brand, founded by Tom Ford in 2007. The brand focuses on glamour, and luxury in particular. The brand also has it's own mens grooming line, unlike many others.

I particularly love the use of complementary colours in Tom Ford's Beauty advertisement, as it grabs the eye and brings in the viewer. The makeup is not necessarily a beauty look, but it is beautiful in it's own right. I think that if I were to use Tom Ford as my chosen brand, I would focus on the use of complimentary colours in my work.

Shiseido -

"To inspire a life of beauty and culture” - Shiseido

Shiseido is a Japanese skincare, cosmetic brand, that was founded in 1872 by Arinobu Fukuhara, the former head pharmacist of the Japanese Imperial Navy. The name originates from Chinese Yi Jing, and combines the forward-thinking of the Western World, and the wisdom of the Eastern. It is now officially the oldest cosmetic company in the world. The company aims to help their customers live beautiful lives.

Shiseido is an interesting brand. I think that if I were to use Shiseido as my chosen brand, I would like to explore the Japanese culture and include this in the makeup looks.

Charlotte Tilbury -

"Give a woman the right makeup, and she can conquer the world". - Charlotte Tilbury.

In September 2013, Charlotte Tilbury created her own makeup line, which has become more and more popular. Her aim is beautifully transform her clients, using makeup. Her first product was 'Charlotte's Magic Cream', which she had mixed herself for years and years, using backstage on models.

Charlotte Tilbury is all about glowing, radiant skin, which I think would have to be a main feature when it comes to the photoshoots. I think that I could create some effective looks for this brand, with glowing skin at the forefront of my images.

 NARS -

"Treat your makeup like jewellery for the face. Play with colour, shapes, structure - it can transform you". - Francois Nars.

Francois Nars founded NARS in 1994, beginning his collection with 12 signature lipstick shades. He promotes self expression, and exciting artistry through his 'no-rules' beauty collection. As a fashion photographer himself, he aims to bring this aspect of high-fashion to beauty.

Nars is an interesting brand as it is so popular worldwide. I think that the looks I would create would have to be leaning much more towards high fashion than other brands, and less towards the glamorous, signature styles. I think that this brand would allow me to use colour, as well as focus on beauty makeup.

Max Factor -

"You are not born glamourous, glamour is created". - Mr Max Factor.

Max Factor was a makeup artist, living in LA, when he decided he wanted to create his own line of makeup. In 1916, he began to sell his own eyebrow and eyeliner pencils, which was one of the first time's that these products were available outside of the film industry. Four years on, and he had his own line of cosmetics. The term "make-up" was coined by himself. The brand still to this day focus on the glamour that he aimed to bring to everyday women.

Max Factor's adverts mainly focus on the beauty/glamour makeup, whereas I would like to focus more on a brand that indulges in being creatively farfetched, and explore their materials a little more.

Lancome -

"I'm not beautiful like you. I'm beautiful like me." - Lancome.

Founded in 1935 by Armand Petitjean in France, Lancome is a cosmetics and perfumery company. The term 'Lancome' is derived from Le Château de Lancosme, a ruined castle in France, whilst it's logo takes inspiration from the roses that grow around it. In 2015, Lisa Eldridge was appointed Global Creative Director. The brand is famous for it's new technology skincare, as well as it's 'Hypnose' Mascara, which is patented.

I particularly like the Spring/Summer 2016 looks that Lancome have created. It is very light and soft, but also infuses bright colours in pastel tones. I like their exploration with colour, but I think that for this unit I would like to look at brands that are more art-focused, and simply more wacky.

M.A.C -

"MACnificent Me" - M.A.C

Initially created for makeup artists, but now sold worldwide, MAC Cosmetics was founded in 1984, by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo, with the assistance of chemist, Vic Casale. MAC is certainly a popular choice with a large range of people, due to their diversity within their products, as well as the quality.

I personally like the way that MAC produce their advertisements, as they are usually either very colourful, or dark and grungy. I like the whole feel of MAC, from their products to the packaging. I think that MAC could be a potential choice for my brand.

Givenchy -

"Luxury is in each detail" - Hubert De Givenchy

Givenchy is a French, haute couture clothing brand, founded by Hubert de Givenchy. Givenchy aims for modern, lady-like fashion items, and the makeup is very similar to this. The most recent campaign, Spring/Summer 2016, focuses on angelic lighting, soft colours and pastel tones, whilst some of it's previous looks consist of the traditional, iconic red lip.

Givenchy is an interesting brand, as it does focus on more luxury looks, but I like their catwalk looks as they are different to others that I have seen. They change the shapes and sizes of their model's faces with their makeup, which I find eye-catching, you have to take a second look. For this reason, I think that this could be a potential brand for my makeup looks.

SS2016 Catwalk

I think to find out the brand's identity, looking at a Google Search of images was important and probably the most beneficial to me. I could see instantly the moods, ideas and image of each brand through looking at the looks they have created. I now have to think about which brand I would like to choose, as I am stuck between Ellis Faas, Illamasqua and Givenchy. I think that each of those brands bring creativity to their looks, as well as create beautiful images. I am concerned that I may not be able to find as much information on both Illamasqua and Ellis Faas as they are not as well established as Givenchy, and are much newer brands. I do not know whether it would benefit me to look at Givenchy as it is an older brand with many more catwalk looks. This is a big decision to make, as this whole unit depends on me choosing the right brand.
