Technical File - 60's Hairstyles Using Rollers.

During our practical with Lottie, we looked at 50's, 60's and 70's hairstyles, in order to gain more experience with the heated rollers. We were able to chose a look from one era, and practised it in our session. I decided that I would recreate a 60's look on my model, Lucy. I particularly liked the sweeping side fringe, and the backcombing to give volume.

Health and Safety -
Always make sure that products are clean and sanitised, ready to use. This goes the same for brushes and equipment.
Make sure your hair is tied back, with no jewellery that will interfere with the model/client.
Make sure you use a cape to cover the model/client's clothing.
Sanitise hands.
Always complete a consultation beforehand.

Products -
Heated Rollers
Sectioning Clips
Sectioning Comb
Dry Shampoo
Paddle Brush

Method -
  1. Begin by brushing the hair through, to ensure that there are no knots.
  2. Section the back of the hair from the front, then section off a section the width of a roller from the centre top of the head, vertically down, to give three sections at the back.
  3. Start with the red rollers (to give a bigger lift) at the top of the back of the head. Put two more underneath, to leave a total of three rollers down the back of the head.
  4. On either side, place the blue rollers at an angle, a total of three, side by side to the red central rollers. Under the red rollers, you can now roll any leftover hair into a blue roller.
  5. Once the back is completed, move to the front. Create a side parting, and place the red rollers away from the parting on either side, to give life to the front of the hair.
  6. Now leave the rollers to cool.

7. Once the rollers are cooled, you can now take them out of the hair. Start by taking out the ones at the back which were put in first, and move to the front.

No styling has happened yet.

8. You can begin to play around with the styling of the hair.

Here I have brushed out the curl slightly, to give a softer, less bouncy, but still a voluminous curl.

8. Backcomb the back section of hair to lift into a small beehive. You can spritz with dry shampoo to hold, or spray hairspray onto hands and work through the hair.

Here I have completed a 60's updo. The hair is backcombed at the back on the head, and pinned into place.

I really enjoyed this session with Lottie as I feel I have started to become more confident with rollers. This is the second time that I have used heated rollers, and initially I struggled getting the sections of hair comfortably and tightly into the rollers, without them dragging. Throughout this process I understood that you have to pull the hair gently upwards, so you do not obtain the dragging curl, which takes the lift out. My model has short hair, and I think that this updo really suited her face shape. I am pleased with the outcome of my look, and would like to try using rollers on longer hair to see if I can get the same outcome.
